Philippe Starck + the Hudson chair for Emeco
Take a good thing. Make it shiny.
Philippe Starck was one of the first designers to take Emeco‘s Navy chair out of its original context and place it into a modern design-focused setting. After striking up a relationship at New York’s ICFF in 1999, Philippe Starck and Gregg Buchbinder’s new friendship launched Emeco’s transformation from a U.S. Navy supplier into one of the top design furniture brands.

The very first Starck/Emeco collaboration was the Hudson chair, created for the Hudson Hotel NYC in 2000, which was the first new design for Emeco in more than 50 years. Starck used prime elements of the 1006 Navy chair to create the Hudson, and Starck had the Emeco metal workers learn a new skill – hand polishing. Less than a year later, the Hudson was chosen for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
Starck continued designing for Emeco and created the Emeco Stool, Kong Chair, Heritage Stacking Chair, and Icon Chair. In 2012 Emeco and Starck collaborated on the Broom Chair, which is made of 90% reclaimed industrial waste.
